PRESS RELEASE

Seminarians of St. Sophia Seminary and Bishop Daniel Give a Gift of Life – Donate Blood

Understanding the Church’s teaching on a value of human life and the need to offer unconditionally in saving lives of others, the seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary (South Bound Brook, NJ) Subdeacon Volodymyr Yavorskyy, Mykola Zomchak, Hryhorii Matviiv, Mykhaylo Bokalo, Vasyl Hrytskiv and Vladyslav Huk accompanied His Grace Bishop Daniel on a trip to a local Somerset, NJ area medical institution – Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center – in order to donate blood as an act of charity, fraternal love and self sacrifice.

Speaking to a group of seminarians that are enjoying a few weeks of summer break before the new academic year begins, Vladyka Daniel stated, "The Holy Orthodox Church understands the fact that there is a need for organ donors and that Orthodox Christians should accept this as a sacred challenge to their generosity and fraternal love in order to save the lives of individuals that could benefit from such a donation – gift of life.”

His Grace Bishop Daniel also mentioned that the example of the seminary students of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA will encourage the local parishes and individuals to register as donors, donate together and take up the challenge of becoming “donor parishes.”

Vladyka also said, “Donating blood helps save the lives of our neighbors – it is literally a gift of life. That is why the Church encourages the parishioners to respond to a real need in our communities. By raising awareness, encouraging discussion and providing ways to give, local Ukrainian Orthodox parish families could play a significant role in transforming the lives of others through donation.”

A survey, conducted by Christian research centers found that 10% of Christians have given blood in the last year compared to 4% of the general population who have given blood in the last two years. Every blood donation saves or improves the lives of up to three people.

According to the blood center, supplies shrink during the summer months with families vacationing from work and school, making the demand even more important than usual. If you would like to donate blood, you can schedule an appointment to donate with the Community Blood Center of your local area directly, by visiting the website of a local medical facility.
