Inauguration of the New Academic Year 2013-2014 at St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary!

Another academic year began at St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary with the celebration of the Archpastoral Divine Liturgy at the Seminary’s Three Holy Hierarchs Chapel. 

On Saturday, September 28, 2013 His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and His Grace Bishop Daniel began a new chapter in the Seminary’s Academic year, celebrating the Holy Mystery of Eucharist, inviting the faithful of the Church to share in the learning experiences of the Church’s Seminary. About a dozen of priests and deacons and dozens of faithful from parishes near and far gathered to pray with the hierarchs that the new academic year will be a successful one for all the students enrolled at the seminary with each opening heart and soul to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the example of the three educators/Fathers of the Church – the patrons of their seminary chapel – Sts. John Chrysostom, Bazyl the Great and Gregory the Theologian.  There are currently eight resident students enrolled at the seminary. There are an additional five students enrolled in the St. Stephen Deaconate course conducted by the Antiochian House of Studies program, who may eventually enroll in the Graduate Study of Resident programs.  Our Church also has an additional resident student  - Subdeacon Theophan Mackey, who is enrolled in St. Tikhon Seminary in South Canaan, PA.

The seminary Provost, Very Rev. Fr. Bazyl Zawierucha welcomed the seminarians back to their school home and invited everyone to participate in various liturgical and ministerial services of the Seminary.  He urged the faithful to keep the seminarians in their prayers during each day as they struggle through life in a society, which will continually tempt them in order to draw them away from their calling.  He thanked all those participating in the opening ceremonies and special prayers.
Both hierarchs addressed the seminarians, stating that they are called to be examples of faith and prayer to the people of the parish communities.

Bishop Daniel addressed the seminarians “to pray and study in the Seminary sacred precincts entering into an intimate relationship with Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God. This relationship produces spiritual maturity and gives produces that, which the Orthodox Christian world in general and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in particular,  are in need of during this 21st century – Orthodox priests-pastors who are men of prayer, models of holiness, men in love with and devoted to the Gospel of life, which they are called upon to love and proclaim in season and out of season and the Eucharistic Christ, Whom they with trepidation hold in their hands at every Liturgy and distribute to the faithful who approach with awe, faith and love.”

His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, the Rector of St. Sophia Seminary, addressed the student body with words of encouragement, stating that “throughout the Seminary’s almost four decades devoted to prayer and study, our Lord sent forth new witnesses, new heralds, who as Deacons, Priests and Bishops, the graduates of the seminary, continue to preach the Kingdom of God and repentance…The return of our seminarians from last year, together with the arrival of four new seminarians from Ukraine gives us the occasion to praise God for His “mighty acts” in their lives. The fact, dear seminarians, that you have just come, or that you have come back, shows the action of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit in the Church. Amidst many invitations and enticements in your lives you have felt an attraction to the priesthood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which is a pearl of great price, and with generous love you are here to pursue or to continue the discernment of your vocation. The action of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit are clearly at work in your lives.”

Following the Divine Liturgy, the clergy, faithful and the seminarians shared in the Agape meal prepared by the Seminary’s chef – Mrs. Maria Morozovska.

During the luncheon, Mr. Michael Komichak, President of the Senior National Ukrainian Orthodox League of the UOC of the USA formally presented the seminarians of St. Sophia Seminary with Scholarships towards the advancement of their academic and pastoral skills. In his presentation, Mr. Komichak noted that St. Sophia Seminary now has its own Senior UOL Chapter, and the organization looks forward to the active participation of the Seminary students in the outreach projects of the UOL.

Father Vasyl Pasakas Dmytryshyn and Subdeacon Adrian Mazur, long with all semianrians presented His Grace Bishop Daniel with a beautifully decorated birthday cacke. Both seminarians greeted Bishop Daniel, reflecting upon the importance of his Archpastoral ministry in the Church. Subdeacon Adrian stated that the bishop is an example for the seminarians of how important the virtue of patience is, as seminarians prepare themselves for the grace of the Holy Priesthood. 

The hierarchs and seminary staff expressed their deep gratitude to all the volunteers – staff members of the Consistory and Seminary, who prepared a luscious feast for the celebration.

Урочисте Відкиття Навчального Року Української Православної семінарії св. Софії!

В суботу 28 вересня в семінарській каплиці Свято Софіївської Семінарії УПЦ США відбулося офійійне відкритя нового навчального року. В честь відкритя відбулася Божествина ліургія яку очолив Високопреосвяеніший Митрополит Антоній та Преосвященіший Владика Даниїл, також співслужили священики з навколишніх парафій.

Навколо євхаристійного столу згромадились не тільки мешканці нашого дому, але і запрошені гості. Передусім, це професори, котрі приїздять до нас  з лекціями, також були представники USL.

28 вересня 2013 року Божого урочисту Літургію відслужили Високопреосвященіший Митрополит Антоній і Преосвященіший Єпископ Даниїл в намірах професорів та студентів, звертаючись також з словом Божим до зібраних братів-студентів. По закінченю літургії Високо преосвященіший Метрополит Антоній та Преосвященіший Владика Даниїл в своії повчальній проповіді наголошували на те яким має бути добрий християнин також і семінарист. В своїй проповіді  вони звернули особливу увагу на важливість цього  дому в житті семінаристів, адже тут вони набирають інтелектуальних знань, необхідних для священицької праці посеред різних людей.

В цей день 28 вересня святкував своє день народження Преосвященіший Владика Даниїл, з привітальними словами Владику привітав настоятель церкви пам'ятника св. Андрія отець Юрій Сівко.

Друга частина урочистості була перенесена в їдальню.

Після смачного обіду продовжилась неофіційна частина цієї урочистості де священики, брати-семінартсти і гості вітали Владику Даниїла з його черговим днем народження бажаючи йому здоров’я і ще довгої праці в Христовому винограднику.

В семінарії, ми є присутні як очевидці діл, які робить Господь. Серед звичного ходу життя даної установи, – в дусі молитви та навчання збігає час. Кожного дня поклик Христа, до своїх вибраних, звучить голосом звичайного розпорядку: на молитву, на працю, навчання, спорт чи відпочинок. При кінці тижня, коли немає лекцій, кожен семінарист посвячує себе більше апостольській праці: на парафії допомагаючи Владикам.

Крім того тут є чимало заходів, впродовж навчального року, що допомагають в духовному та інтелектуальному зрості майбутніх священиків-пастирів.

На завершення владики благословили усіх присутніх і побажали легко розпочати і добре завершити своє навчання.
